Spearfish KOA campsite review {South Dakota}

Shared August 9, 2015

Spearfish-South-Dakota-review

After a frustrating couple days with the broken fresh water tank, we were looking forward to getting to South Dakota and spending a few days at the Spearfish South Dakota KOA. I knew the minute we pulled into the Spearfish, South Dakota KOA campground that it was going to be a treat! As soon as I entered the lobby of the office we were greeted by Kim, one of the owners,  checked-in and taken to our spot.

We had a back-in spot near the end of a row. Lots of space to back-in, green grass, a fire pit and picnic table. We had plenty of room to park our truck – which can sometimes be a tricky thing with back-in spots. We were really pleased with the spacing of the spots – we felt like we had plenty of privacy and room between the other campers.

This campground is beautiful – it’s like camping in a backyard. Lots of green space, mature trees and beautiful grass. I talked with the groundskeeper and he has taken care of this RV park for 20+ years and you can tell he takes great pride in making the grounds look nice.

The pull-thru spots are nice and long and could easily accompany bigger rigs. The fire pits are made with stone pavers and the picnic tables in great shape.

Our hook-up station was well-maintained and the wifi in the park worked great! As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts wifi at RV parks is always hit or miss – if you have too many people using the network and too many people streaming media – it can crush network speeds and essentially make the wifi worthless. I appreciated that that the wifi was reliable because it’s a necessity for me working on the road.

Down by the front office you’ll find a kid’s playground area. . .

And an awesome pool. The kids spent a lot of time at this pool. The water was clean and there are lounge chairs if you prefer to watch from the sidelines.

My kids definitely thought this KOA had one of the best pools they’ve played in – and they are getting to be experts on the topic. 🙂

In the middle of the park you’ll find a nice spacious laundry room – complete with a nice big table for folding on site. You’ll also find the showers and bathrooms in this building. The showers and bathrooms were always clean – the showers were hot with great water pressure.

Recently changing hands to new owners, the main office building has undergone a complete remodel. It’s clean, organized and well stocked with supplies and groceries if needed.

They even have a generous supply of RV supplies – which is always helpful if something breaks or gets lost.

Spearfish-KOA-ice-cream

Every night in the main building from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. they have an all-you-can eat ice cream social for just $3 a person. They serve Cascade Glacier Ice Cream (from Oregon!) and they have featured flavors every day. My kids loved this! It was a nice treat for us because RV freezers are not really cut out for ice cream storage, so we rarely have it on the road.

Mt-Rushmore-Spearfish-KOA

Not only did we have a great time at the campground, but it’s in a great location for day trips. During our stay at the Spearfish KOA we took day trips to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Vore Buffalo Jump, Spearfish Recreational Center and the DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery (I’ll share more about these activities in future posts).

We had a wonderful time at the Spearfish KOA – it has been one of our favorite places to stay. You can expect friendly people (awesome customer service), beautiful landscaping, great location to town, nice accommodations, and a good place to set up camp.

Sponsored post – In exchange for my honest review and feedback about our stay at the Spearfish South Dakota KOA, they comped part of stay at the park. All thoughts, opinions and photos are genuine and mine.

Did you buy any Black Hills gold? What did the kids think of Mount Rushmore?

Hi Deborah! We did not buy any Black Hills gold. Growing up in Alaska I used to work in a goldmine helping people learn how to pan for gold, so I guess I’m not overly impressed with it anymore. 🙂 The kids LOVED Mount Rushmore!

My husband and I love Spearfish. We have visited there many times and are planning on retiring there in a few years. Everyone there is always very friendly.
