Tawas Point State Park – Birds, frogs, sunsets galore! {Michigan}

I’m not blogging in real time – this is from our travels on/around August 31, 2015. Follow us on Instagram to find out where we are currently!

After Harrisville State Park, our next stop was just a short drive south along the eastern coast of Michigan to Tawas Point State Park. We just couldn’t get enough of Michigan’s state parks – once we paid the $30 for the annual pass the $29/night camping fee seemed like such a steal for the places we were staying. Beautiful views, wildlife, sandy beaches – Tawas Point State Park didn’t disappoint either!

Within the boundaries of Tawas Point State Park there is an old lighthouse, the Tawas Point Lighthouse – which we toured for a nominal fee. The main building has a great museum on the history of the lighthouse and the area.

While on a short hike through Tawas Point State Park we discovered the area is highly regarded for bird watching! We are not bird watching experts (although we love seeing them) but this state park is apparently a migratory trap in the watershed – so they get all sorts of species migrating through. It’s surrounded by shoreline – so gets a lot of shoreline birds. Such a treat to watch for these!

The extensive shoreline meant we saw a TON of frogs. More than we’ve ever seen in one place. My son was downright giddy that we could walk along the shoreline and see frogs jumping every where. . . .

I guess the best frog spotting is after dark (or so we were told), but we stuck to sunset walks and saw more than enough!  I had to put my “brave hat” on because honestly walking on a dimly lit shoreline looking for slimy friends gave me the heebie jeebies – but I survived! And most importantly I made some very special mother-son memories during our sunset frog scouting along the shores of Lake Huron. (For the record, no frogs were harmed or held captive).

The temperatures warmed up our second day here and kids put on their swimsuits to splash around in Lake Huron.

Michigan has the BEST sand, seriously. I heard the eastern coast line was rockier – but as far as we had seen, it was still soft and perfect for putting your toes in!

If you like to kayak – you can rent kayaks for the day (and possibly hourly?) from the park office Tawas Point State Park.

I know I’ve been sharing a lot of posts about Michigan – but we just loved the state parks and the Great Lakes so much. . . .and I still have more to tell you as we continue to head south along the coast. . .
